OBJECTIVE:
The M. A. Course in English deals with a developmental sequence, moving from fairly easy topics to more complicated topics which draw upon, build upon, the earlier steps. On the whole the idea is to Read-Write-Think and do., i.e., to do it again and again, in a cycle of increasing concentration and depth. English Literature offers a combination of various approaches to the study of literary texts, including the historical, author-oriented readings, periodical and a postmillennial focus. It is underpinned by certain core issues: identity, Diaspora literatures, culture and literary engagement; historical contexts; the ideological and social function of literature; exploring self and others through literary forms and genres; how a student might more effectively read texts and the world and hoping to enhance career prospects.
 
The course also offers the opportunity to study a range of topics and periods including the contemporary, and it is designed to appeal to the student who wants to undertake further research in literary studies; wishing to take general studies in English literature to the next level; or, The introductory module, Reading, Research & Writing, reinforces and further develops all the required skills and competencies relevant to literary studies, ensuring that from the third Semester onwards student will be able to pursue self-directed research on an agreed topic of her choice and submit a dissertation. (approx. 20,000 to 25,000 words).
 
AIM:
 
The course will help students:
  • Gain familiarity with learning approaches connected to successful writing.
  • Compose in a variety of academic, professional, and civic contexts, including digital environments.
  • Undertake a productive writing practice, including revising.
  • Make and support arguments.
  • Acquire an introductory understanding of rhetorical analysis.
  • Practice critical and evaluative reading.
  •  Understand the role of conventions in different genres.
  • Be introduced to the humanistic discipline of rhetoric.
  • Investigate questions of the humanities through rhetorical study.
  • Undertake English Language Teaching with due recognition of its importance in the Indian Education System. This is designed to hone and enhance the skills and to harness the knowledge available in this language. This is done with diligence and commitment with a view to foster efficiency and skill in the use of the language.
  • To familiarize students with their own cultural and intellectual heritage in order to provide them with a balanced viewpoint when approaching predominantly Western literary and theoretical and critical texts.
  • Practice library research methods.
  • Evaluate primary and secondary sources.
  • Compose a researched argument.

Nature of Course Duration Intake Fee Structure
Semester Scheme. 4 Semesters (2 Years). 20: 10 (Merit seats allotted by the University) + 10 (Payment Seats/Management seats). the fee structure of the P. G. Course: As recommended by the KSWU, Vijaypur.
 
Eligibility for (P. G. Course):
A candidate should possess a B.A. Degree with English as optional subject with 50% of marks in the subject and in aggregate obtained from any recognized university (45% for OBCs and 40% for SC/ST and Cat-I candidates). Candidates with any Bachelor’s Degree with at least Basic English in two years of the programme, who satisfy minimum eligibility (50% for GM, 45% for OBCs and 40% for SC/ST and Cat-I candidates) are also eligible.

Library Facilities:
The college has well established library with books in English literature and language. There is also the facility of e-books and e-journals.
 
Significant Features
  • To authorize women students through effective use of English language and English proficiency through training.
  • Training the students with the effective use of English language through Language Lab.
  • A cash prize will be instituted for the student who secures highest marks in M A (English) examination.
  • Academic based activities will be conducted for students like enacting drama, poetry reading, debate, elocution, quiz on literature, creative writing etc.
  • Students will be sent for demo in the sister institutions of the Association to feel the experience of language and literature teaching.
  • Special lectures will be organized by inviting scholars from different Universities and colleges.

Placements
Students after completing their P. G. Degree from the Department:
  • Go on to get employment as teachers in schools or in Colleges and Universities all over India.
  • They have opportunities in the Corporate and Media field.
  • They can get appointment as content writers and technical writers and editors.
  • The Association has number of sister institutions where there is opportunity for employment.
  • They can become translators.
  • A placement cell will be established in the Department to coordinate between students and prospective employers.
